Baseball Legends are Made in October

October is nearly here, and to baseball fans that means one thing – playoffs. The regular season will soon be over and teams will begin battling it out to get to the World Series. The Dodgers looked like the strongest team for most of the season, but other teams like the Cleveland Indians have shown their prowess on the diamond (in the Indians’ case, that prowess was shown in winning 22 straight games from the end of August into September). Legendary October Baseball

There are a lot of moments to choose from, and there is plenty of debate around the legendary moments that take place in October, and the players who were a part of them. In this post, we’ll look at three of those moments.

Big Papi in the Clutch

October 17 and 18, 2004

David Ortiz a.k.a “Big Papi” put his name in the annals of baseball history with his clutch performance in the 2004 ALCS. Ortiz and the Red Sox were down three games to zero to their hated rivals, the Yankees, until Big Papi stepped to the plate in the last inning of Game 4 and blasted a walk-off homer. The next night in Game 5, Papi came through again with a walk-off single in extra innings. The Red Sox would go on to beat the Yankees and claim their first World Series title in 86 years.

"We’ll See You Tomorrow Night"

October 26, 1991

In Game 6 of the 1991 World Series, Minnesota Twins outfielder Kirby Puckett launched an 11th inning walk-off home run that caused legendary broadcaster Jack Buck to declare, “We’ll see you tomorrow night!” The Twins would go on to beat the Braves in Game 7, largely behind Puckett’s offense and defense, and capture their third title in franchise history.

Mazeroski Wins it All for The Pirates

October 13, 1960

The Pittsburgh Pirates’ second baseman Bill Mazeroski cemented his name in baseball lore by crushing a walk-off home run in Game 7 of the 1960 World Series against the New York Yankees. It’s the only Game 7 walk-off home run in the history of the Series, and needless to say, Mazeroski was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2001.
